To Mark Black History Month, Canada Post Will Issue Two Stamps
Toronto, Ontario - 02 December 2008: The National Congress of Black Women of Canada Foundation is proud to announce that Canada Post will be issuing two commemorative stamps to honour Rosemary Brown and Abraham Doras Shadd. The stamps will mark the contributions that these two Afro-Canadians made to society and the role that they played in shaping our nation.
Rosemary Brown was the first Black woman to be elected as a member of a Provincial Legislative Assembly in Canada and the first woman to run for leadership of a Canadian political party at the national level.
Abraham Doras Shadd played a major role in the Underground Railroad and was the first Black person to hold political office in Canada.
The National Congress of Black Women of Canada Foundation in partnership with other community organizations across Canada will mark the unveiling of the stamps with celebrations using the theme, “The Courage to Make a Difference”.
In British Columbia the Foundation will be hosting the unveiling of the stamps on February 1, 2009. In Winnipeg and Halifax the Congress of Black Women of Canada chapters will be having similar celebrations during Black History month 2009.
Here in Toronto, the Congress of Black Women of Canada – Ontario Region will be hosting the “Faces of Courage Gala” on February 21, 2009 at the Toronto Congress Center, 650 Dixon Road. So as to perpetuate the legacy of Mrs. Brown and Mr. Shadd, part of the proceeds from this celebration will provide scholarships to students in the faculties of Women Studies and Political Science.
